Physical Education
All students receive two periods of PE every week. We offer an educational experience that involves the total development of our students through the acquisition of knowledge, skills and attitudes that will enhance their quality of life and encourage a positive attitude toward self and others. Our curricular activities promote physical fitness, teamwork, positive social skills and fundamental knowledge of rules and cooperation.
Spanish
Classes are taught daily to all students in Pre-K through fifth grades. In this program communication and oral language skills are emphasized. In grades K-5 vocabulary and grammar are integrated with some reading and writing activities appropriate for the grade and language levels. Additionally, unit topics from the grade level are integrated into the teaching.
Library
Students in grades K-5 go to the library once a week for an integrated library lesson and book checkout. Parents are also welcome to check out books. Our program includes a professional librarian. The librarian organizes a lunch reading program for students in grades 3-5 to read and discuss 12 state selected books for the school year. The students then get to vote at the state level for their favorite book. Additionally, RASCAL (Reading All Summer Can Accelerate Learning) encourages our students to build their “reading muscle” by read over the summer. The school provides a suggested summer reading list by grade.
Computer Lab
We believe technology is a critical tool for preparing students and teachers for life-long learning and productive work. As a result, computer literacy is taught within the context of the core curriculum. Children in all grades use the computers in their classroom. Kinder students visit the computer lab once a week for 30 minutes. First and second grade students visit the computer lab 30 minutes twice a week for specified instruction. Third, fourth and fifth grade students visit the computer lab for 40 minutes twice a week. In addition to the scheduled computer lab time the teachers can sign up to use the lab at additional times. Third to fifth grade students practice keyboarding skills to prepare them for writing projects on the computer.
Music
Music is a part of everyday life at Candil Jacaranda School. Assemblies, serenades, grade presentations and school-wide music concerts provide an opportunity for every child to sing and dance. Second and third grade students learn how to play the recorder while our fourth and fifth graders learn how to play the guitar and read music. Our 1st to 5th grade students have the opportunity to join the choir which performs during special events at school as well as in Broward County musical events.
