Voluntary Prekindergarten Education Program (VPK) is a FREE educational program created to prepare every four-year-old in Florida for Kindergarten and build the foundation for their educational success. The VPK program offers each child an opportunity to perform better in school and throughout life by offering quality programs that include developmentally appropriate curricula with a focus on early literacy skills, accountability, manageable class sizes, and increased teacher credentials. All eligible four-year-olds can participate in a VPK program option.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s)
Q . When is my child eligible for the VPK program?
  • Your child is eligible for the VPK program if his/her 4th birthday falls on or before September 1st of that school year.
Q. How many hours does my child receive for the fall or summer VPK program?
  • 540 hours for the fall program or 300 hours for the summer program.
Q. Do I have to pay for supplies or a registration fee?
  • No, not if your child is attending only the VPK portion of the day
Q. If my child stays in the program beyond the VPK class hours, would I be able to pay the difference?
  • Yes, but this is an arrangement made between the parent/guardian and the provider.
Q. How many times can my child enroll in the VPK program?
  • Your child is eligible to attend either the 540-hour fall program or the 300-hour summer program.
Q. What is the absence policy for children in the VPK program?
  • Family Central pays the provider for 3 days per month, with no questions asked; 7 days per month, with a parental letter explaining the absence; and any days beyond these 10, with approval and proper third party documentation. The child is also allowed 5 vacation days per session.
Q. If needed, would I be able to transfer my child to a different provider after registering?
  • Yes, as long as the child has enough remaining hours and/or the program the child is transferring into has at least 10% of the class hours remaining.
Q. If my child hasn’t completed the program is he/she eligible to transfer to a different county?
  • Yes, but the parent would have to re-apply in that county.
Q. Is transportation provided?
  • No. There is no transportation provided for this program. You may wish to choose a program that has extended hours for which there will be a fee.
Q. What is the schedule for the VPK program?
  • Each provider is free to choose its own length of the core instructional VPK day and the start and end dates of their program. Please refer to the individual Provider Profiles under the VPK Provider Profile Listing for approved schools. Contact each school to find out the start and end date and hours of the VPK program.
Q. Are there any other programs available for my children?
  • Yes and the information is based upon the parent’s/guardian’s needs. Family Central staff is available to help you explore your options. Please call Family Central Inc’s Resource & Referral Hotline at 954-724-4609.
